Updates on newly reported M. rubra infestations

We identified another inland M. rubra infestation in Newburg, Maine this past summer.  Wetterer and Radchenko (2010) also reported an inland infestation at a rest area in Medway, Maine.

Myrmica rubra infestation was confirmed in the Seattle, WA area in the Washington Park Arboretum.  David Zuckerman from the arboretum reported infestations confined to the Foster Island Lagoon area.

Myrmica rubra infestations in Carbonear, New Foundland, were observed having nuptial flights this past September by Dr. Barry Hicks, College of the North Atlantic.  This is particularly noteworthy, as we are yet to see a nuptial flight in our M. rubra infestations in Maine.

Updates on newly located infestations at multiple sites on Prince Edward Island were reported by Wetterer and Radchenko (2010).  These folks review the current data on the world-wide distribution of invasive M. rubra populations in their recently published paper,

Wetterer, J. A., and A. G. Radchenko 2010. Worldwide spread of the ruby ant, Myrmica rubra (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Myrmecological News 14:87-96. (journal link).
